Tech Tip Tuesday: Should I Install This Update?
Should you install that update right now, or let it sit? A 30-second gut check to figure out the timing, with the honest answer: yes eventually, but not always today.
That little red badge shows up on your phone or laptop, and suddenly you're standing at a crossroads: tap "Update Now" like a responsible adult, or hit "Remind Me Tomorrow" for the fourteenth day in a row?
Short answer is yes, eventually you will need to install this update. Here's how to figure out the timing.
The 30-second gut check
- Security update? Install today. Not tomorrow.
- Something already broken? Install now, it might fix it.
- Everything working fine and it's a big update? You can wait a few days.
Why waiting a few days is smart, not lazy
Big updates (new iOS, new Windows version) get installed by millions of people before you. If something's broken, the internet finds out fast. Waiting 3-7 days costs nothing.
Small patch updates (like 26.0.1) are almost always quiet bug fixes. Just install those right away.
But don't wait forever
That badge isn't going away. Skipped updates pile up, security holes stay open, and eventually you're forced into a bigger, messier update all at once. The update is happening either way — the only choice is whether you do it on your terms or Apple/Microsoft's.
Before you hit install
Back up your stuff. Five minutes now beats a bad afternoon later.
